　第10回セミナーレポート

「長久手市文化の家」の講義室1 で第10回セミナーを開催しました !

　今回の参加者は9名。

　新規の方3名にご参加頂きました。

　新型コロナウイルス感染防止対策を取り
　換気、消毒、マスク着用、対面回避、
　距離の確保等、
　運用の工夫をして実施しました。

■Icebreaker　

久しぶりの集合。新メンバーもいます。
リラックスのため、まず全員の自己紹介や、次のようなテーマでのペアトークを行いました。

・How did you spend the past four months?　
この4カ月間、どのように過ごしていましたか？
・If you could go out on a date with someone famous, who would you choose? Why?
有名人とデートできるとしたら、誰を選びますか？それは何故ですか？

ペアトーク後は、いつものように相手の話の内容をみんなに共有して頂きました。

OUTPUT

・Let's do it clockwise. 時計回りにやりましょう

・I couldn't work from home.　私は在宅勤務はできませんでした

■TOEIC Part 1

TOEIC　Patr 1 の写真描写の問題にトライ

　A: a woman is putting on a pair of shoes

　B : a woman is dusting a television screen

　C : a woman is watching television

　D : a woman is plugging a power cord into an outlet

まずは個人で解いて頂き、ペアで意見交換しました。

この問題はみなさんよくできていました。

電源プラグをコンセントに挿す(put a power cord into an outlet)
という表現が出てきましたので
ここで電気製品関連の表現をいつくか取り上げてみました。

OUTPUT

・Please plug your headphones into your PC.
あなたのヘッドホンをPCに挿してください(注:ヘッドホンはheadphones (複数) 耳当て部分が2つあるので)
・Please plug in the TV. / Please plug the TV into an outlet.
テレビの電源プラグを(コンセントに)挿してください
・Please unplug the TV.　/ Please unplug the TV from the outlet.
テレビの電源プラグを(コンセントから)抜いてください
・fan 扇風機
・hair dryer ドライヤー　(注: 単にdryerと言うと洗濯乾燥機のことを指します)
・iron　アイロン　(注: 発音は[áiərn] アイアン　です　アイロンは×)
・(electric) mosquito killer　(電気)蚊取り機
・Please turn on the TV.　/ Please turn off the TV
テレビをつけてください / テレビを消してください
・Can I charge my phone here？ここでスマホを充電できますか？
・My battery is low.　充電が少ないんです
・My battery is about to run out. /My battery is about to die. / My battery is ruuning out.　
充電が切れそうなんです

会話を聞き、その内容に関する質問に答えるPart3のサンプルテストを行いました。

(Woman)Hello. I’m calling about a coffee machine I purchased from your website. It stopped working even though I haven’t had it for very long. I expected it to last much longer than this.

(Man)Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Our warranty covers products for up to a year. Do you know when you bought it?

(Woman)I’ve had it for a little over a year, so the warranty is probably just expired. This is so disappointing.

(Man)Well, I’ll tell you what we can do. Although we can’t replace it, since you are valued customer, I can offer you a coupon for 40% off for your next purchase.

1回聞いただけで正解するのは難しかった方もいたようですが、ペアで協力し、みなさん正解を導いていました。

また、
このdialogの中で使われているalthoughとeven thoughにも着目してみました。

おそらくあまり使い慣れていないであろうこれらの表現を身に付けるため、みんなで例文を作って練習してみました。

・Although he’s scared of (afraid of ) heights, he went bungee jumping.
高所恐怖症であるにも関わらず、彼はバンジージャンプに行きました

・Although he was only 70, he passed away from the COVID-19.
彼はまだ70歳でしたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症で亡くなりました

・Even though I am 47 years old, I can run faster than the average person in their twenties.
私は47歳であるにも関わらず、平均的な20代の人よりも速く走れます

・Although my hubby's father is almost 70, he works very hard.
・私の夫の父親はほぼ70歳ですが、とても一生懸命働きます
　(hubby = husband)

・Even though it was raining in the morning, I took my dog for a walk.
朝、雨が降っていましたが、私は犬を散歩に連れて行きました

・My English skills have not leveled up, even though I have studied it for a long time.
長く英語を勉強しているにも関わらず、私の英語のスキルはレベルアップしていません

・Even though I am almost in my fifties, I'd like to expand my business skill.
私は50代に近いですが、ビジネススキルを広げたいと思っています

・Even though I am 34 years old, I have only experienced one job.
私は34歳ですが、１つの仕事しか経験がありません

・Although I am an English teacher, I also like Spanish.
私は英語教師ですが、スペイン語も好きです

・Although I am 22 years old, I still can not make curry.
私は22歳なのに、まだカレーを作れません

・Although my body is stiff, I enjoy yoga.
私はカラダは硬いですが、ヨガを楽しみます

・Although my daugher passed the entrance examination, she doesn't study hard now.
私の娘は入学試験に合格はしましたが、今は一生懸命勉強していません

なお、althoughと比べてthoughはよりカジュアルで、いろんな位置に使うことができるという特徴があります。
これについて少し紹介しました。

Though he is rich, he is not happy.
彼はお金持ちですが、幸せではありません。

Michael, though he studied hard, didn't pass the exam.
Michaelは、一生懸命勉強しましたが、試験に通りませんでした。

I like to play the guitar, though I am not so good.
私はギターを弾くのが好きです。うまくはありませんが。

I like to play the guitar. I am not so good, though.
私はギターを弾くのが好きです。うまくはありませんけど、ね。

また、even though　と　even if　の違いについて質問が出ました。
even thoughは事実で使い、even ifは仮定の話で使う、と説明しました。

(例)
・Even though it was raining in the morning, I took my dog for a walk.　
朝、雨が降っていました【事実】が、私は犬を散歩に連れて行きました

・Even if it rains, I will take my dog for a walk.
例え雨が降ったとしても【仮定】、私は犬を散歩に連れて行きます

■TOEIC Part 7

TOEICで最近よく見かけるスマホチャットの問題を実施しました。

Questions 152-153 refer to the following text message chain.

No. 152 What is suggested about Mr. Bach?
(A) He has been to Kansai more than once.
(B) He currently works in Beijing.
(C) He is on a business trip.
(D) He works for Fly Right Airlines.

No. 153 At 12:15, what does Mr. Otani mean when he writes, “Sure thing”?
(A) He has confirmed the arrival time of a flight.
(B) He is certain he will be able to find a parking place.
(C) He agrees to wait at the door near the customs area.
(D) He knows Mr. Bach must pass through customs.

この問題も、若干難しい箇所もあったようですが、みなさんポイントを捉え、正解を導けていました。

今回の問題は飛行機に関する問題でしたので、その関連で以下のような仮定質問を使い、ペア会話を行いました。

1.If you could design a private jet, what would it look like?
自家用機を設計するとしたらどのようなものにしたいですか。

2.If you were on a plane and you realized that it was about to crash, what would you do?
飛行機に乗っていて墜落しそうだと気付いたらどうしますか。

3.If you saw an airplane crashing into your neighbor’s house, what would you do?
近所の家に飛行機が墜落するのを見たらどうしますか。

4.If your friend told you that they're afraid of flying, what would you tell them?
友達が飛行機に乗るのが怖いと言ったら何と言いますか。

5.If you were on a plane and a passenger beside you was about to give birth, what would you do?
飛行機で隣の乗客が出産しそうになったらどうしますか。

6.If you were on a plane and you found out that there were hijackers on-board, what would you do?
飛行機に乗っていてハイジャック犯も搭乗していると分かったらどうしますか。

7.If you could fly to any country in the world for free, where would you go and why?
飛行機代が無料で世界のどこかに行けるとしたらどの国にしますか。それはなぜですか。

8.If you got a job offer to become a cabin crew member, would you accept it?
客室乗務員の仕事の内定をもらったら受けますか。

9.If your child told you that he wanted to become a pilot, would you support them?
自分の息子/娘がパイロットになりたいと言ったら応援しますか。

10.If you could change something about modern planes, what would it be?
現代の飛行機のどこかを変えられるとしたら、どこにしますか。

実際の生活の中ではなかなか起こりえないような想定質問でした(笑)が、みなさんそれぞれの創造力を大いに働かせて会話できていたように思います。

それはコクピットの中に乗客用シートがあり、景色を見ることができるでしょう。

The frequency of the crash of airplanes is much lower than traffic accidents.
飛行機の墜落事故の頻度は交通事故よりもはるかに低いです。

今回は新型コロナウイルス対策を取って実施。

行う前はうまくいくかどうか心配でしたが
みなさんのご協力により
いつものようにスムーズに進行できました。

セミナー開催決定に先立ち事前アンケートを取り
「会場開催」or「オンライン開催」の希望をお聞きしたのですが
ほとんどの方が会場開催を希望。
やはり実際に会って話をしたいという方が多いことを痛感しました。

今後も、コロナの情勢を注視しつつ、
できる限り実際に会って会話できる時間を大切にしていきたいと思います。

しかし同時に、今後を見据えてZoomを使った英会話も実験的に準備しています。
「新しい生活様式」も取り入れつつ、
将来に渡り、多くの方と英会話を楽しむことができる環境作りをしていきたいと考えています。

また、今回でこのセミナーも10回を数えました。
ここまで安定して開催してこられたのも、
ご参加、ご協力頂いているみなさまのおかげです。

これからも、少しでもみなさんの英語学習の糧になればと思っています。
