1. Sanae Takaichi became Japan’s first female prime minister.
I was glad to witness this historic moment.
2. Japan’s stock market index exceeded 50,000 yen.
This was really surprising. In the first half of the year, the index was in the 30,000 yen range, but it rose far faster than I had expected.
3. The Fuji Television scandal came to light.
Frankly, I had thought that such things could happen in show business. However, it was truly epoch-making for me to see these issues
finally coming to light.

1. I was temporarily assigned from Sugi Pharmacy to JFAH, the Japan Foundation for Aging and Health.
I'm still not used to my work at the foundation, but I consider this a golden opportunity to break through my own limits.
2. Our family visited my father’s hometown in Hida City for the first time in 30 years. (We also enjoyed Gattan-Go.)
Since my father passed away 29 years ago, we hadn’t visited his hometown for a very long time.
In September, I drove my mother there, and the next day my younger brother joined us with his wife and son.
Being able to gather there with our extended family made it a truly special occasion for us, and we had a wonderful time.
We also enjoyed Gattan-Go, a sightseeing rail bike ride through the mountains, which was a unique and memorable experience.
3. I finally started learning NLP, which I had wanted to do for a long time.
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a powerful method for communication, self-understanding, and achieving goals.
I was finally able to enroll in the seminar course this year.
To become a certified practitioner, we need to complete a 10-day seminar. I have already taken four seminars so far.
The concepts are incredibly powerful, and I’m excited to master them.

1. Prime Minister Takaichi
The first big news was Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi,
the first female Prime Minister of Japan.
She has strong motivation.
I hope she will help revitalize the Japanese economy.
2. Osaka Expo
The second big news was the Osaka Expo.
I could not go there, but it was often talked about on TV.
I also heard that some people I know went there many times.
3. Increase in Bear Sightings
The third big news was the increase in bear sightings.
Bears appeared even in areas far from the mountains, which made many people worried.
I think it's an important issue and effective measures should be taken to prevent accidents.

1. Trip to Tokyo
My first big news was my trip to Tokyo.
I visited famous places such as the National Diet Building, Asakusa, and Tsukiji.
I also went to a restaurant recommended by my English conversation friend,
and I enjoyed a very fun and delicious dinner.
2. Trip to Kyoto and Osaka
My second big news was my trip to Kyoto and Osaka.
I won a prize in a supermarket lottery,
and I got tickets to see comedy and theater at Namba Grand Kagetsu.
It became a very enjoyable and memorable trip.
3. Learning About My Health
My third big news was my health checkup.
I was told that my blood sugar level was a little high, so I joined a health seminar.
There I learned how important it is to eat enough protein.
Thank you for sharing your top three news stories, Mary!
I really enjoyed reading them. It’s so like you to choose your travels as two of your top three — and I’m glad to hear that you had such memorable trips. By the way, I didn’t know the term “National Diet Building,” so thank you for teaching me something new.
It’s also wonderful that you won the lottery! I’m sure that made your trip even more special.
As for your blood sugar, I imagine it must have been quite a shock at first. But knowing how well you take care of yourself, I’m sure you’ll be able to manage it well through your diet and lifestyle.
Best regards,
Michael

1. Moved to Marketing
switched to the Mktg dep. honestly, it’s been pretty challenging because I had to learn everything from scratch. The culture is totally different from sales, feels way more academic. so I’ve been trying to soak up as much as I can, as fast as I can.
2. got more serious about fitness.
set a strict workout routine. I used to hit the gym once or twice a week, but now I go three times every week. Plus paying attention to my daily protein intake.
3. started shadowing practice
since about half of my dep speaks English. I’ve started practicing shadowing to improve my listening skills. not sure how much I’ve improved yet lol. But I’m sticking with it.
Many thanks,
Ryan Ryan
Thank you so much!
Your reply has a very casual and natural tone, and I could clearly see how much you’ve changed this year. I really enjoyed reading your writing — it feels very natural and very “American,” haha.
You and I are in a similar situation, since we both changed our work environment, so I really sympathize with how you feel. And your shadowing practice is great! It’s very inspiring to see how seriously you’re working to improve your skills!
We haven’t talked in a while, but I think we’ll have a chance to meet and talk in English in Tokyo! I’m really looking forward to that great opportunity!
Best regards,
Michael

1. President Takaichi
I admire her political performance and her way of speaking.
Also, I like her fashion sense.
Recently, she has lost weight, so I’m worried about her.
2. Princess Aiko
I’m a big fan of Princess Aiko.
I admire her diligence and the great effort she makes.
Also, I praise her manners, her way of speaking, and everything about her.
I hope she finds the right person and leads a happy life.
I don’t mind whether she becomes Empress or not.
3. Wild Bears
Wild bears have been appearing in residential areas.
Some people were attacked and even died in miserable conditions.
It was truly awful.
I wonder if global warming is one of the reasons.
We must learn how to coexist with wild animals.

1. My Health Problem
I was shocked to find out about my health problem, which was detected by chance.
It’s known as a silent killer because it has no symptoms and can lead to sudden death.
I was truly frightened. I really wanted to avoid having surgery.
Luckily, I ended up needing only follow-up exams.
I hope my condition doesn’t get any worse.
2. Closing My Family Grave
I mean, it’s called HAKAJIMAI in Japanese.
Our family grave is located far away in Mie Prefecture.
We are getting older and have no one to inherit it.
We have no children.
Maintaining and visiting the site has become difficult for us.
We finally decided to close the grave. We completed the process this November.
3. Free Time
My mother-in-law lived far away by herself.
I needed to visit and stay one night to take care of her.
She passed away at the age of 101 last year.
Now I don’t have to do that anymore and have plenty of time for myself.
I am trying new things and enjoying my life.
Thank you for your news, Margaret!
Your news included some information I didn’t know, and I found it very insightful. I really enjoyed reading it, especially the part about the Imperial Family and your family grave. I didn’t know about the concept of “closing the grave,” but now I understand it very well. I truly admire your decision and the effort you have made.
I also hope your condition gets better, and I sincerely hope we’ll have many opportunities to talk and share ideas in 2026.
Best regards,
Michael

1, finally moved to Australia!
One of my biggest dream came true in this year! It’s been amazing living here in Australia!
2, started living in a remote area (Yulara!)
(A once-in-a-lifetime experience!) Uluru is an amazing place to visit! The big rock is beautiful!
3, Bondi beach shooting
The news made me sad that something bad happened in Australia….
Thank you, Sophie!
I’m so happy to hear that this year became a dream-come-true year for you.
It must be amazing to finally start a new life in an English-speaking country — I can imagine how exciting that feels.
Your third news really made me think. I had heard about the incident, but to be honest, it had already faded from my mind. Reading your message made me realize how differently we see things depending on where we live.
I hope you keep enjoying your life in Australia, and hopefully we can chat in English again sometime!
Best regards,
Michael
